To Super league or not to super league, that is the question??

Well, as raised recently at the AGM the proposal for the Cornwall Super League has been received and is attached. If you have any comments to feedback please do by the middle of November to Mick Hewett or put them on the blog for all to see. Also if you see anyone please direct them to this document!!

  2. I note that Penlee "A" are not included in the example Premier League in the attached proposal (shock, horror, probe!!). I assume they would be in the new League 1, West (Group 1?) but am struggling to come up with a list of other teams that would be in there with them. Any suggestions? This would give a better idea of how much extra travelling might be involved.

  3. Headaches are a coming. 6 left in league1. Do we play each other several times to leave league2 alone, or have 2 teams from league2, to make it equal 8each. If so by what means? Promotion and relagation to apply? Group1 mens will have to sort it. worst case fancy travelling to Perranporth, Mawnan, Falmouth 1 hrs travel. Will Penlee be able to support a team in leage 3?

  4. Although a more competitive league (promotion/relegation)I believe would help I can't see how the League 1 would play more than 10 games (even though they talk of 18 games max but if you haven't got the teams then it's not going to happen) unless successful and playing off for end of season trophies. If the format of this proposal is to be accepted I would want to see 2 teams moved from League 2 to League 1 to bring them up to playing 14 games min. As the season ends the only extra traveling would be for the end of season trophies or if successful and gaining entry into the Premier League. If in the Premier League then that would create a lot more travel as we are so far away from the centre of Cornwall but for most clubs I doubt they would be concerned about that although it would be interesting to find out what Porthmeor think of it! So overall parts of it I like but do have some concerns and so unless changes can be made to the proposal I would have to be against it.

  5. It is suggested that the premier league need not play on a fixed day, but could play on a weekend. Could this apply to leagu1/2. Would it effect friendly/club comp. We have 18games at present, do we want to lose 4 A sides and reduce to 14games. The same applies to the B league. Promtion and relegation could inject a little spice into our present sterile league system, but I am not in favour of losing those games. T bring 4 teams to league 1 to make up, and therefor 4 teams into league 2 seems a step too far.

  7. Having read the proposals and having given some thought to same, I feel that
such a move was inevitable at some stage. It is a fact that numbers
participating in the sport have fallen dramatically in the last few years
and the Western Division has possibly been more affected than most. As to
whether or not this is correct is hardly material as the basic fact is we
have at present 10 teams within each of the two existing leagues. Clearly
the problem to address is falling numbers, which inevitably leads to falling
standards, which gives rise to frustration - hence the proposals before us.
To sit tight as we have done for many years and basically make little
change, if any, is no longer a sensible option. Something, or variety of
somethings has to be found to not only arrest the declining numbers, but
then to increase membership and thus restore the Division to a healthier
position. Whilst I don't have the answers, I would suggest :-
    1. we immediately introduce promotion - relegation. The absence of such
cannot be helping matters and besides it seems very strange that we appear
to be in isolation on this issue. When I have casually asked on many
occasions in the past as to why we are the only division without this
incentive, I have always received the same old pathetic answer 'it just
    wouldn't work'. What nonsense!
    2. by applying promotion/relegation we also wave goodbye to the objection
that two teams from the same club cannot compete in the same league. Surely
there cannot be many more motivating circumstances than competing against
ones fellow club players - this can only raise interest, enthusiasm and
standard of play! Prevention of such healthy competition can only have a
negative impact, so let's get rid of this outdated idea. Incidentally, the
likes of Chacewater seem to be doing very well!
    3. Now for the Super League. In due course, when we have restored the
division to a much healthier position, the introduction of a premier league
would be a very good move, but not just yet! In my opinion, to take the best
4 teams away away from an already weak league is hardly going to raise the
morale of those players in the remaining 6 teams and is certainly not going
to raise overall standards. Indeed, it would probably have a negative impact
and besides I feel that 10 teams is the minimum number of teams in a league
if it is to be meaningful/viable. Reducing the league games to 1 per week,
rather than 2 as at present, is also going to be a negative factor.
No, for the moment let us take a few steps at a time and implement the more
dramatic change of a Super League when the climate is somewhat more
    favourable.
However, if County is hell bent on the creation of a Super League, as a
compromise, why not run it initially in parallel with the existing leagues,
rather than instead of ( i.e. similar to the European Super League in
soccer). After all the league season finishes so early, so some games could
possibly be played after the main league has finished.
Just some thoughts - there rests my case.
